"This is a mandatory class; I can't just leave."

"Well if maybe another actually stood up with you would would of left right?"

"Only if the entire class walked out. Then, we'd get a new teacher."

"hm... Well now that is not very nice. This teacher is trying to prepare for the real world. Like everyone is just a frost mage" viola said trying out that sarcasm.

The teacher nodded. "Better to know something from at least five schools rather than mastering just one."

Viola smiled totally understanding where the teacher was coming from.

"Oh and one more thing you should know that isn't common knowledge." The teacher created an arcane ward with his hand and used his wand on it. The ward became larger and presumably, by becoming less transparent, more powerful.

"You can use varius magical mediums - hands, wands, becomes a bit troublesome with staves - together."

"Why is it troubling for Stave users?"

The teacher make a mockup of a staff using just arcane magic. He held it in one hand and then with both hands. "Most of the staves you'll encounter out there are greatstaves and those only function at full power once both hands are used," he explained. "Even if you used them with just one hand and powered them up with a wand in the other, the increase of power would be too insignificant."

"What if I have more than just two arms?" Another student asked. This question didn't annoy the teacher, as it was relevant.

Viola turned to the student and then the teacher for answers

"More arms means the mediums are divided, not multiplied; it's a common misconception," he explains and another pair of arms appears just below his real ones. Of course, just the demonstration with the staff, those are also just magic. "For example, if you had four arms, you would need two greatstaves to match the power of someone with just two arms and a single staff."

"Anyone want to see what happens when you combine all of the known magical mediums?"

This wasn't part of the test or the study plans; he just wanted to motivate them.

And maybe show off a little.

Funnily enough, all the other students raised their hands, as was customary in schools.

The teacher only smiled. "There isn't an empty field large enough for me to try it out, but I do happen to have a pocket dimension that exists solely for the purpose of testing spells," he said and with a quick motion of his hand, created a portal. "I expect those of you who choose the offensive specialization will make use of it, as the training grounds are rather small."

"Will any of this be on the test?" This made the teacher burst in a hearty laugh.

The teacher and the other students followed closely behind.

The pocket dimension was a nigh-endless green meadow, with a pleasant, afternoon sun that was neither hot nor cold.

The teacher motioned them to stay and walked a few feet in front of them, then stopping and cracking his knuckles.

"what a beautiful place...."

The teacher begun chanting.


"Primum ignis dicam ad opem (Primal fire, I call you to my aid,)
 Dona mihi flammae sine fine  (Grant me flame unending,)
 furore mille Soles! (with the fury of a thousand suns!)"

The teacher then burst into flames, but his clothes weren't burnt, just lightly charred. His hands, now an embodiment of fire, also gained claws.

"First is spoken runic." His calm voice and demeanor stayed, however.

"whoa!!!" Viola was surprised

"I'd kindly ask you not to try repeat the chant," he said, drawing a circular rune around himself. "It either won't work or straight up kill you."

When finished, the rune glowed with a bright, fiery orange.

"oh.."

The teacher then created a fireball with his hands, which, when amplified by both spoken and written runic, was already more powerful than the average one.

Then, he used a wand, followed by staff and then finally shot the fireball into the sky with a greatstaff.

The sky dimmed, shifting into an otherwordly gray with patches of orange.

"how is this happening?"

"After three mediums, the spell's power grows exponentially," he explains. "If the previous three mediums made the fireball an eight, what you're about to see is likely a thirty."

In a fair distance away from both him and his students, a single, fiery mass came hurling from the sky and upon impact, violently exploded.

Then came another and another and another. Not before long, they rained down on the meadow as if they were raindrops during a heavy thunderstorm.

Just what in the world would require this amount of punishment?
