Dark Times Ahead : Prologue (Full)

What you should know:

This is going to be a series of roleplays alternating between future and present. When one thread ends, another begins. A certain goal must be achieved for a new thread to begin. You can join in at any time so you can join into later threads even if you haven't been in the earlier ones.

Central city, 1pm, 10 years into the future

Lets face it, Central city had never been a safe or a beautiful place to begin with, but these days it was more of a ruin then it had ever been. Most of it's streets where deserted, except for a fleeting movement here and there. There were cracks in the pavement and there was a heavy feeling in the air. Faintly detectable, the sweet smell of rotting meat.

There were some activity pockets though, mostly centered around the churches. Holy ground was the only safe haven most people had left. Those infected couldn't go near it and the mirror creatures couldn't stand being near it either.

It was such places that people not only found safe havens, but people rounded up to form fighting teams, Rescueing those not yet infected, striving to find a cure, foraging for food and above all, kill any creature that got to close for comfort.

This is where our story begins, in one of the churches around central city, functioning as a base for one of these squads, trying to find a solution for their rather precarious situation. Food is growing more and more scarce in the city and they're at risk of starvation

Foraging was a methodical affair and one always undertaken by a full squat, some would forage while others would stand guard, ready to fend of any infected or mirror creatures that might try to attack one of the foragers.

Today they were foraging on the outskirts of the city as most of the supplies from the inner circles had already been found and consumed. Food was the main issue, they still had a good source of water, a reservoir on holyground, but food was dangerously low.

The outskirts always made Serath uneasy, to much open spaces, to little places to hide. But they aught to be a treasure trove for food. Vedgetable gardens that might still yield something, storm cellars and bunkers where people might have stored food supplies.

The white rabbit with the frayed soft blue ears was currently in one such cellar, having hit a little gold mine worth of canned foods. They might last the refuge a week, though it was probably intended as a year supply. There were just a lot of mouths to feed.

She loaded her bag with as many cans as she could stuff into it, peeping her head out of the hatch to see how the other where fairing. There was more in here then she could carry alone anyway.

One shuffled behind buildings, away from the open streets, between and through the darkness of alleyways, anywhere in the shadows and where it held the potential to hide and stay... moderately safe. Danger was always an issue yes, and with those infected roaming the streets? It was pretty much up to eleven. And constant paranoia wracked the frame of a certain child dragon.

Deep blue skin, and scaled a dull green. The kind of colours which could easily cause one to slip into the crevices of darkness within the streets without a major threat of being caught by searching eyes. Blue wings fluttered silently as the child gripped a section of a crumbling wall, green eyes observing the outskirts fearfully. Silence. And that made his little finned ears hurt.

His clothing was light, very light yet dark in colour, and what he carried was few - a simple bag around his wrist, shaking to ans fro with each step. Another note is that the child was alone, rather that with company. Safety in numbers? But the last numbers he had been with died! And so did the group before that! That's not safety at all! So rather than group with others, the little dragon had decided it would be wise to be by himself. And he'd been doing well so far. He hadn't died! Groups attract, but one can slip by with ease without attracting a lot of attention. 

Figures moved in the distance, and one soon vanished. Carté had to squint his little green eyes to make them out a little more easily, and discover that no, they were not monsters or possible threats at first glance. Seemed to be scavenging, and at the thought of that, his stomach rumbled quietly. It made no difference, but placing a hand on his tummy to soothe the ferocious growling did make him feel like it was helping. It had been almost a day without food, but the question was... would he be willing to risk his life by associating with others?

Or he could steal it. That seemed like a better option.

So the dragon slowly and carefully moved through the alleys and the backs of buildings, circling the location of the small group. His gaze shifted to and fro, making triple (with the occasional quadruple) check that no threats were in sight. He'd have to get closer, circle to the point he would be close enough, wait for them to move, and slip behind and take it then sneak away.

This couldn't possibly go wrong!
