Illusion of Success

Lillith just looked at the teacher.

It took out a book and turned a few pages. It then looked back at his class with a grumble.

"Welcome to one half of your illusion studies," it started. "I'll be your defence against illusions professor. Has anyone of you ever seen a magic trick?"

Complete and utter silence. The guy with that scarf was a bit creeped out, while the mass of hair that set next to him just didn't care.

Lillith raised her hand excitedly."I have I have!!! I've seen many!!"

The teacher motioned her to keep her hand down. "There's not many of us here, so no need to raise your hand. Just speak," he said. "Of the tricks you've seen, when did you find out they were tricks? When did your disbelief kick in? When did you find out you were being played like a fiddle?"

"Well it depended on the illusion. There are certain things that you just can't do. Like for example there was this one time my old master made a fire elemental chase me down. There was something of f about. It was that no matter how close it got to me, I couldn't feel the raise in temperature. Thats when I realized it was an illusion. It looked very real but it didn't feel real."

"Excellent; that's one of the things about illusions – there'll always be a detail, a single small mistake even the best of illusionists will make. On this class, you will learn to look for these details and determine what is real or not." The teacher then threw a book at the mass of hair and it coiled back to dodge, only for the book to dissipate into the air.

"And we will do this by paying close attention and not spending time reading romance novels thinking no one can see you," he lectured them, giving an angry look at the hairy mass of hair. "If you paid attention, you wouldn't coil back. The book was completely blank; no books like that exist."

Lillith smiled. "That was cool!"

"You can't attack students, not even by fake out!" the guy with the scarf said. "The principal will hear about this!" The monsterous teacher snickered.

"I am the principal," he said. "And unlike the the mortal realm, I still believe in punishment for inadequate behavior." The guy with the scarf sighed and looked down.

The hair person chose to remain silent and just put the romance novel it was reading back in its bag.

Lillith grinned and giggled a little. (I like this teacher)

"So, on this first class, we'll learn how to defend from illusions by having two working eyeballs," he said, scribbling the words down on the blackboard. "A method that I obviously don't use. I'm gonna need one volunteer and because Miss l'oeil has been the only one participating, I'm looking at you two."

The hair person shuddered and the guy with the scarf rolled his eyes.

"You guys are so lame! Didn't you both come here to learn? Exactly how are you going to do that with the attitudes you have? Really stop wasting the teachers time and grow up! The teacher isn't asking much from you!" Lillith crossed her arms.

The hair person stood up and went in front of the blackboard. "so, what do you want me to do?" 


The teacher went closer to the odd figure. "Could you please speak up?"


"what do you want me to do?"

Lillith still had her arms crossed but look a little satisfied that someone actually listened.

The teacher took out a pistol and took aim at the hairy thing.

"If I shoot you, do you think you'll die?" The teacher took the safety off and the gun clicked.

The hair person hastily analyzed the gun and concluded with a scared 'yes.'

A click.

The gun was fake and just had a small flag pop-out that had 'BANG' written on it.

"Barrel's not big enough to a bullet. Next!"

"Hmmm..." Lillith laughed. (Lol he thought he was going to die!)

The guy with the scarf switched places with the hair person. He thought he was ready now that he knew what was gonna happen, but the teacher had a lot of aces up his sleeve..

The illusion consisted of pretty ladies approaching the guy and flirting with him. Him being a lonely and gullible fella, he didn't think too much of it.

That is, until the girls revealed themselves to be sirens – sea monsters that lured sailors to their doom by their looks and hypnotisng singing.

They started clawing at him and the illusion ended with him unharmed and rolled up in a ball like some sort of baby.

"Sirens can't leave water nor walk on land!" the teacher said. "What do they teach those human kids these days!? Horrible, absolutely horrible. Next!"

Lillith walked up to the teacher. Eager to see what will happen.

"You're cut a from a different cloth that those two," he said. "Tricking you won't be that easy."

"Well than try your best. "

The teacher took out a pink scythe and offered it to her.

"Why isn't it purple?"

"I have some degree of colour-blindness," the teacher said and the scythe disappeared. "The lesson from this is that more often that not, illusions are only bound by the user's abilities, or in this case, ineptitude."

"Ohh I see. Interesting."

"That concludes today's claas. You are free to leave."

"Quick class" Lillith said before leaving.
