Illusion of Success

They reached the end of the staircase and the succubus went to the small space beneath it. She moved a few crates out of the way and a small patch of the wall was miscoloured.

"There used to be a grating here."

"What happened,? Is it gone now?"

She knocked at the wall. It sounded hollow.

"No."

"Oh, well than let's break it open."

The succubus tried kicking, but it only made a small dent. "Good news is that they used something cheap," she says. "Bad news is that it's still pretty hard."

"Pretty hard my arse!" Lillith started to bang and scratch on one part of the wall.

The succubus was amazed at Lillith's abilities and wondered if whe practiced them often. When the wall destroyed, they were greeted by a ventilation shaft.

Lillith smiled when the wall for destroyed. "You lead the way."

The succubus kneeled down and went through. "Thanfully, both of us are small, so no chances of us getting stuck."

"Guess it's good to be small for once." Lillith crawled in.

The succubus kept crawling for a good minute or so. It was awfully cold in there.

"Is it always c-cold here... Man I'm freezing!"

"We're in an abandoned, yet heavily-guarded area," the succubus says. "Ordinarily, if this system still worked, it would be a tad warmer."

"Freaking wish the place wasn't abandoned..."

"I'm uh... gonna need you to go back a bit," she said. "I've accidentally passed the grating we were supposed to drop down from." Given how small the shaft was, what the succubus asked of her may have been impossible.

"Not exactly the easiest thing man!" Lillith turned to ink and slowly moved back. "Watch your step.."

The succubus made sure not to touch Lillith's inky form and opened a grate, jumping down.

"The administrator's office," she says. "If there's any docs worth stealing, they'd be here."

Lillith let her inky form drip down before forming back to her normal one. "Time to look I guess."

Strangely, everything was gone. Not even the worthless guard shift logs were there. Someone must have overheard their plans... or when the succubus got caught, all of them were moved someplace safer.

"No, no, no!" she said, opening a file cabinets only to find empty files. "This is all wrong! They were here a week ago!"

"Really?! How could they have been moved like that?!" Lillith sounded a tad mad.

There was a hard knock at the door and cracks appeared all over it. "Oh no," she says, backing away. "He's here."

"We must hide!" Lillith said whispering.

The succubus hid beneath a table.

The doors were broken and a thin, slender being entered the room. 

Unlike the bulky golems, this one was smoothly cut from a rare, light-gray variation of clay and great detail was put into making it human-like proportion-wise, but not so much when it came to its features.

There were lights of white where its eyes were supposed to be and although it had no nose, it had two, miniature, side-by-side holes above the thin slit that was its mouth.

It moved around the room, searching it.

Lillith had turned into ink and went to a corner quietly watching the golem. She was looking for its weak spot.

It didn't have any obvious one like the other golems.

It searched where they didn't search – the closets and cupboards.
