He nodded. "But I've seen everything it has to offer and can't leave even if I wanted to. Which is why my shapeshifting friend is gonna help me find a way around that; not for my sake."

"The lines of living tend to blur when you only exist in a book," Ayah noted. "Does that make characters in a regular book alive as well?"

"The Book of Dungeons is the only one who does this," he says. "Every person in another book is alive just in your head. The obvious exception being summoning books."

"There is something we could try," Aubrey said and the shapeshifter immediately cut him off.

"No! No! Don't even say it, don't even think about it. We are not going down into the Core," the shapeshifter scoffed him angrily. "Right now, they have a chance of being permanently stuck here, but if they go down there, all bets are off. How do you even know about it?!"

"Been there, done that..."

"No, forget about it. All of you. We're not going there." Whatever was in there, the Shapeshifter was bent on not letting them know.

He and Aubrey stared at each other, the kind of stare two predators have before they fight over prey.

"Interrupt me one more time..."

"And you'll do what, flail about?"

"I'm stronger than you."

"There's a well-hidden hatch beneath the floor of the Tavern that leads to the Core, a magical artifact that's keeping everything under control," the shapeshifter explains. "Destroy it and you have approximately twenty seconds to make a run for it before it implodes and destroys everything."

'i bet I could find it with my scanner.' ren Thought as he secretly looked at his scanner and lightly tapped his foot on the floor. "Make a run for it? Run where? Do we make a portal and leave? Would you guys be able leave too?" Liela asked.

"I told you million of times that permanent and artificially-created residents can't leave," the shapeshifter lectures her and looks at Prima. "Which makes things even more complicated."

"The Core repars itself."

"And you know that how? Don't tell me you-"

"I was nineteen years younger back then and I wanted out of here," Aubrey confessed." I striked it with a hammer and it cracked. Then, the plague spread from one world to another..."

"So, if damaging it slightly causes it to spread to nearby worlds," the Shapeshifter thought aloud. "Maybe if I relocated the Tavern to the earliest created location, its status as the weakest link would allow you to leave by crossing over."

"Like trying to cross the river at its most narrow point," Volt reitirated. "Seems plausible. Where's the catch?"

"Too many things to consider; where'd the transition appear, how big will it be, where'd it take you and how long would it stay open?" the shapeshifter listed a few. "Still count this as plausible?"

"I think the two of us can handle the first three," Volt looked at Ren. "We'll just have to know what our scanner is supposed to be looking for."

The shapeshifter moved the entire tavern to the location that served as the weakest link, tore out a few wooden boards from the floor and let them down to the Core via a latch and some very crudely-made stairs.

The Core was a light-blue, brightly-shining orb with pulsating wires running through it, situated in mid-air inside a small, cramped room with a low ceiling. If any of them jumped, they'd hit their heads.

"Wait, this is it?" Ayah mumbled. "I expected a giant computer or anything more exciting than this."

"Would you rather fight the equivalent of a god and persuade him to let us out?" Maggie teased her.
