What was the inspiration for your OC? Empty What was the inspiration for your OC?

OCs are very rarely created out of thin air. There's usually a structure behind them, a reason for their creation. Maybe seeing something else inspired you, maybe an idea you had ended up blooming into this new OC. Point is, there's usually a story behind the creation of a character.
And I want to know what that is!

This thread is to just talk about how you created your OC. Or OCs. Talk about as many as you want! Your recent, your oldest, whatever sticks in the mind. And what was it inspired by? Directly copying is a sin, but taking small influences from the things we like (or don't) certainly isn't - it means we can expand on the concept the way we want it! And I think that needs to be positively recognised!

So feel free to discuss below!

I suppose I should start with my blue boy, Boa!
His design is weird and odd. And I can't remember what inspiration he was taken from. It was during my spriting phase, and I just messed around with designs. And I wanted to make this edgy villain, I wanted to make a monster. So I made this... weird creature with four eyes and black skin and glowing markings, and I liked it. A lot. I gave him spikes and he was going to be the angry, aggressive guardian of this stupid mystical book.
All of that was entirely scrapped for the character, but the design remained, and that's why Boa looks like he does!

Hallo Spek, I'm here to haunt you for the rest of your days >D

I'll start off my own part of this discussion with my newest character Viven! She's a kelpie, not just a horse hahaha. I had been thinking about making a kelpie character for a long while, since I absolutely love the mythical beings. After talking to Spekkal about it, she convinced me to actually go through with it. Her bio is still a work in progress, and I have a lot to flesh out, but her design was inspired by the colour that represents water and the demonic idea I had for her (She's a decendant from some random demon who came like 4 generations before her in her bloodline). This ended up being black and blue, with a teeny tiny bit of yellow as an accent colour. I'm talking reaaaally little yellow because it's literally just her eyes.
I still have to work out her story and all of that, but it's a start!

Heya, Gear here. Gonna use Darren here.

I'd say darren was inspired by both myself and the avatar character from sonic forces. I just thought to myself, "Hey, what could I do with a mobian who has no powers and how could I make him interesting?", and thus I made Darren. His design and looks are supposed to be basic, no fancy blues, greens, yellows or unnatural fur colours. All in all he is supposed to be an average person trying to keep up with all the people around him.

His personality pulls from how I use to be around people when I was younger. Being the weirdo I was and rather hesitant to be around people and afraid of screwing something up. So far I'm trying to mold him into his own being with the characters he's meeting and the plans I have for him in the future.

So far i think I've done him pretty ok.

What was the inspiration for your OC? Empty Re: What was the inspiration for your OC?

Post by Spekkal Mon Feb 12, 2018 11:38 pm

oh god now for a small summarised story of regret
Time for the inspiration of my first ever OC, hi. This is Kal

I'm not gonna talk about his whole history, so I'll talk about dumb stupid baby me. When I was younger, I'd get those... collectable kids magazines. And it'd have a section with like... 'make a design' and it'd be like 'this is IronFang FireClaw by Billy age 5' and I loved that section. Like, I'd buy the magazines and just skip right to it, because I adored looking at all these radical designs made by kids just like me. And I'd make my own designs on paper and I coloured them with crayon and I'd be like 'I'm gonna send these off and get them into this magazine!' and I never did.

Point is, I think was starting to get into Sonic at the time, and without realising it, I'd got into making fan characters without knowing what fan characters were. I just remember being like 'this is my sonic character called spekkal and he's all the primary colours, red yellow and blue (because I liked those colours when I was a dumb kid), and he has tons of powers'. And I couldn't stop drawing him. And when I got into spiriting absolutely awful sprite comics (shoutout to Sonicandpals for being my inspiration god bless) I made Spekkal. Who was an awful yellow recolour. The rest of the colours were added later. And then he remained a constant staple in my life.

i'm 22 years old what am i doin with my life, guys

Speaking of regret, let's dive into a quick short story of mine about this baby whom I love a lot now: Cayenne

It's funny how she came to be. Her entire 'existence' started off with a design I drew of an antelope with rainbow hair. I felt bad for having to discard her design, because at first I reaaally didn't want to use her design. I went around asking a few people if they wanted her design and do something with it, but they all said I should do something with her myself! I didn't really want to, but after a few months I started just writing a bio and put down on paper what came to mind.

A bit of backstory for her story: I myself am a huge music lover. Especially when it comes to metal, hard rock, alternative metal/alternative rock, etc, but also when it comes to piano music and chillstep, liquid dubstep, melodic DnB and tuff like that. Now, I wanted to incorporate that love for music in a character, but not in a way I did that with Dione (she's more based off of myself when it comes to her love for music). This led to the following decision.

I decided that I wanted to make a character that was in a band. Someone who would travel during tours, visiting the many cities of the world and sing in a band with her best friends. I also knew what kind of music I wanted her to produce together with her band: Metal and hard rock. Her story slowly started to come together:

- She was gonna be an antelope who dyed her hair in rainbow colours just because
- She was gonna be the lead vocalist in a band
- What the hell is gonna be her band's name??? ((It's Cryptonex now))
- What is gonna be in her bio??

In this character I wanted to stick to the more natural colours of her species: a springbok antelope. I think I managed to do so quite okay.

In hindsight I'm really happy I didn't bin the design I made. She's turned out to be one of my favourite characters yet, and I love her a lot. It's still a challenge to get her right IC, but that will come with time, I hope, hahaha.

WHO'S NEXT GIMME ALL YOUR STORIES I LIKE THIS SPEK YOU'RE SMART!

What was the inspiration for your OC? Empty Re: What was the inspiration for your OC?

Post by imbadwithnames Tue Feb 13, 2018 1:50 am

Oh man, where do I even start.

So of course, there's Sonic Forces. It pretty much got me back into Sonic RPing in the first place. In fact, my main Avatar for the game was my main OC, Volt. The idea of a ragtag bunch of Mobians from around the globe coming together to fight evildoers was also an inspiration for my main faction, DVNz.

And speaking of DVNz, the group itself takes heavy inspiration from the Sly Cooper franchise. A small group of ambiguous heroes travelling across the globe to take down powerful crime syndicates: the Cooper Gang. Being part of a linage who's ancestry consisted of bandits: the Cooper family. So on, so forth. There are a lot of parallels between the characters too (e.g. Overclock => Bentley, Alloy => Clockwerk, etc.)

Then, there's the individual characters. I'm going to list Volt and Mirage for now since they're my most developed ones, however I'm gonna have to bullet point them because theres...quite a few inspirations for them other than what I've already stated ^^;

Volt:
  • Tennessee Kid Cooper from Sly Cooper - Snarky but quick-witted marksman thief spy. "Crackshot" was a big inspiration for Volt's rifling skills
  • Cole McGrath from inFamous - Electrokinetics. One of his abilities, Ionic Storm, was an inspiration for Overload
  • Revolver Ocelot from Metal Gear Solid - A big reference for some of his gunslinging tricks and shots
  • Deadshot from DC comics - Master marksman
  • Decidueye from Pokemon - Snipy birbo
Mirage:
  • Chloe Price from Life is Strange - Vocal reference and pretty much the same personality. They're both walking "Jerk with a Heart of Gold" tropes
  • Seraphina from unOrdinary - Mirage's appearance takes a lot of inspiration from her
  • Apollo Robbins, a real-life sleight-of-hand artist - I saw the linked video a long time ago and I've been hooked on the art of manipulation—Mirage's main skill—ever since. I mean...just watch that, and see the 'demonstration' he gives
  • Chris Ramsay, magic YouTuber - A lot of the go-to tricks Mirage does comes from this guy
  • Margay from Kemono Friends - Where I first learned about margays, Mirage's species, from

Oh, I know another! There's Maxie!

Honestly, the concept of Maxie came around because I just finished watching Kill La Kill and I just really liked the character of Nui Harime. A bright and bubbling pink-clad girl who's also a genuine threat and wants to spill blood? Get me on that train! In hindsight, the 'inspiration' is pretty shameless. Maxie's just as equally pink, as equally bubbly, and their fashion is almost exactly the same. Still, while the visual concept was taken, Maxie does deviate from Nui's personality. By not being a psychopath.
Not to say I'm ashamed of this, in fact I ended up getting art of Maxie with Nui's outfit! As to be expected, it suits her!

I was also like 'there's no crossdressing characters' and ended up throwing the concept of Maxwell into the mix. And made them a griffon to have the relate to another character of mine. And then I ended up loving them too much and now they're like one of my main characters, how in the world did this happen.

What was the inspiration for your OC? Empty Re: What was the inspiration for your OC?

Post by Gamma V Thu Feb 15, 2018 4:26 pm

I suppose I should start with my main machine, XM-01.

At the time I created him, I was watching a lot of The Zeta Project and came up with the idea of a pacifistic Metal-type robot character.  Originally, he was going to be my take on Metal Knuckles for a Sonic RP at RolePlayGateway that died before I could even write Pacifist!M.K.'s bio up.  I eventually decided to go to another Sonic-centered RP forum, where I'd hopefully get the chance to use my Metal Knuckles, only to discover that Metal Knuckles was already in use as a typical elite Eggbot.  Not wanting to scrap the idea of a pacifistic, Zeta-esque Metal, I decided to create my own character based on the idea of a prototype "next-generation" Metal.  To differentiate him a bit from his inspiration, as well as give his pacifism some rationale, I decided to make him an extremely curious character and also a very "young" robot.  To that end, I decided that glitches in his programming made his data-gathering protocols too dominant, leading him to just wander away from Eggman's base.  The pacifism would emerge after his overly-weaponized design causes him to accidentally kill an innocent animal while trying to learn about it.  All this happened in 2012.

Sometime last year, I figured I'd tweak the backstory a bit.  Instead of his curiosity and pacifism being the result of a programming glitch, I decided they'd be the result of premature activation, most likely caused by sabotage, meaning his pacifism would stem from his combat programming having not been installed yet.

When I (re)posted him here, having posted a version of him based on the old bio back in 2013, I learned that he couldn't be an Eggman robot, so I decided to make him the creation of my own machine supremacist organization called Machina.

Amber Lucia is basically me as a Sonic anthro, or rather, an idealized version of me.  Where I'm just someone who's fascinated by AI and the like, but still live with my parents, Amber actually has a PhD in robotics and computer science and actually BUILDS such things.  In keeping with XM's Zeta Project influence, Amber has some shades of Ro in her personality, and even lampshades her and XM's similarities to their ZP counterparts during the Runaway Robot RP.

Dr. Koren is inspired by a more overtly malicious version of the surgeon who performed a Nissen Fundoplication surgery on my mother in 2009.  The IRL surgery resulted in severe complications that left my mom unable to keep a job and often leaves her bedridden.  My RP counterpart's mother suffers the same complications, but hers were deliberately induced by a psychopathic Machina operative in order to stop her investigating their involvement in the murder of a prestigious robotics professor and the theft of his magnum opus robot.  His last name, Koren, comes from one of the main villains of Seiken Densetsu 3.

Steel was inspired by the avatar I'd use in online play on Sonic Robo Blast 2 back in 2010.  Said avatar was a Steel-Blue Knuckles, which I thought looked kinda robotic.  I called him Steel the Battle Android and came up with the idea that he was a GUN prototype designed to be able to match the abilities of Metal Series robots.  I used Steel in a handful of IM RPs with friends, and his personality would differ between each, with him either being an inexperienced soldier prone to glitches with a rather human personality or a stoic robot who strictly adheres to his "protocols" and uses a very technical speech pattern.  The current version of Steel is a mixture of those personalities, but he leans more towards the former, having been created to have more of a "heart" than other GUN robots.

What was the inspiration for your OC? Empty Re: What was the inspiration for your OC?

Post by Dregan Fri Feb 16, 2018 2:26 am

Wooo boy, I could go for a while on this one. For now though, I'm gonna stick to one character who draws on quite a few bits and pieces of source and inspiration. Basically, one where I actually have a bit to talk about.
The gentleman in question?

What was the inspiration for your OC? 672378?1515171787 King Zeke

So Zeke, comparitive to most of my cast, is a relatively recent character. Somewhere around... two years back now? Spekkal, Elec, myself, and a couple of our other friends, were talking about villains. Specifically how... well, for the most part we'd moved on from classic colorful villains who you could run big ol' villain RPs with. Instead we had a lot of characters of varying shades of grey, who rather than operating with big bravado tended to operate in the shadows. Villains in their own rights, but ones who were hard to do things with, because their plots were a little too convoluted to just be showing up like 'HEY YO, I GOT AN ARMY FIGHT ME'.
Thus it was decided to create some new villains. But these villains were to be a lot more... classic, colorful! Fun, action-oriented villains we could actually DO things with!
Zeke, of course, was my own.

I sorta started off with a couple of ideas. Around the time I was playing a few games where you sorta... went around the world claiming territory. Usually small flash games to kill time. I know Infectonator was among them - where you start with your infection in a small place and then spread it through the world.
Whilst I liked the idea of a small force trying to spread out and take over, I obviously didn't want it to be zombies or anything like that. A few classics were considered, robots and things, but already kinda had things like that covered. And I didn't want it to be just like... a Dictator and their army, because that didn't strike me as too interesting.
I kept the idea on the backburner for the time being, hoping I could do something with it.

Around the same time I was also super getting into Poets Of The Fall. In particular, I was getting into Locking Up The Sun, and it's music video. Watching that video, one might note the lead singer playing a particularly obnoxious man with a megaphone. Aaand... I adored the image of it. I looked at this man and was like 'I want him to be my character.' This sorta over-the-top loud-mouthed Hollywood-lookin' jerk... I didn't have anything LIKE that. And I NEEDED it.
At the same time I was like; 'But I'm already meant to be working on a new character, I don't wanna make this guy AS WELL.' Still, the more I thought about him, the more I liked the idea - and started considering 'Well what if I DO go for that with my villain?'

I'd always been quite a fan of Mysterio, a Spiderman villain who's meant to be an ex-movies special effect artist, who used practical effects to create illusions and such-like. I started to enjoy the idea of this megaphone guy as a literal film-director using film effects to do villainous things.
At the same time I didn't want him to be too much like Mysterio. Whilst I wanted his powers to link back to film-making... I didn't want it to be just 'using special effects to his advantage'. Thus I decided maybe he could have powers that would have HELPED him with his film-making in the past, instead of having skills sourced from his film-making.

Around the time I had also juuust started to watch JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. In the first season, one concept which caught me was Hamon - in particular that it was a sort of power that was largely fuelled and effected by breathing technique. This idea seemed FUN to me, and I wanted to do something with it.
And thuuusly I came up with Zeke's powers. Combining the idea of the breathing with special effects and such, I liked the idea that whenever he held his breath it would put the world around him into slow-mo... aaand when he released it time sped up to catch up!
...I may've also been watching some SUPERHOT videos at the time. That probably also contributed.

So yeah, I had a villainous film director now, with powers to boot. I just lacked... well, a design and a motivation. For motivation I considered at first the classic 'washed-up celebrity doing crime for moneys', but thought I was still wandering the realms of Mysterio at that point.
That's when this design went up for adopt. I wanted it. I wanted it immediately.
So I got it! Uh, eventually. THAT'S A STORY FOR ANOTHER DAY.
Still, I immediately decided this design was Zeke. And seeing that the design had been labelled as 'Sun Sea Sabertooth', I was immediately given two ideas;
The first was the consideration of island nations from the 'Sun Sea'.
The second was ancient families from 'Sabertooth'.
Thusly, gluing in the earlier idea of someone travelling around taking over different territories I came to a natural conclusion;
"Michael Bay if he had superpowers, discovered he was related to an ancient royal bloodlines, became King of a group of islanders, and decided to expand his crappy kingdom by taking over more and more pieces of land across the world."

Throwing in a royal cloak and a Hawaiian shirt, and Zeke was complete!

So in short, tl;dr, my inspirations for King Zeke?
Infectonator, Poets of the Fall, Hollywood, Spiderman, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, SUPERHOT, Michael Bay, Royal Attire, Hawaiian Shirts, and literally what his design was labelled as in it's file name.
Makes sense to me.
