Trace the Jackal Empty Trace the Jackal

Post by Pennonspar Mon Mar 27, 2017 4:20 pm

Name: Trace Pennonspar Jr.

Nicknames: Trace, Tracy (he hates it), Junior (he hates that, too)

Age: 27

Species: Jackal

Gender: Male

Occupation: Travelling Adventure Scientist, occasional mechanic

Appearance:

You'd think from his slim proportions and long-looking limbs that Trace would be fairly tall... until you placed him next to anyone, and realize he's actually shorter than most, though, of course, that doesn't stop him from looking down his nose at people. He carries himself with a sense of dignity, back straight, face stern, arms behind his back as often as he can, though it's obviously something he puts on deliberately from the way he drops it whenever he's annoyed or in a hurry.

Trace's tan/orange fur is somewhat rough, spiky and intense, even giving a jagged spikey zig-zag appearance to his tail, marked with lines and specks of dark grey, mostly around his face and limbs, giving him a somewhat intense look, accentuated by the near-constant frown and deadpan glare on his face.

He is usually seen wearing metallic blue boots and gloves with faintly glowing red lines while on adventures and when ready for action, but in his day-to-day he prefers simple green shoes and white gloves. He doesn't always wear a lab-coat wherever he goes, but, he is seen with it more often than he is not, unbuttoned to let it flow behind him dramatically.

Personality traits

Likes:

- Praise and looking smart

- Mysteries, and solving them

- All going to plan

- Thrill-seeking

Dislikes:

- Height Jokes

- Ignorance and Idiocy

- Paying compliments

- Spicy food

Personality:

Trace is, in two words, an insufferable genius. In many more words, he likes to create an image of being a stern loner who stands by the merits of his own science and wit, but ultimately, he feels a need to impress others, and thus tries to push people away and appear disdainful socially, and then attempt to draw those people back in with his intelligence, always looking for a chance to prove his smarts and overcome a challenge that nobody else could.

Obviously, he has a lot of difficulty being honest with himself and others about his feelings and as a result can be hard to read when he isn't angered or flustered, but despite that, he ultimately means well and, even if he will do so begrudgingly, he will always repay debts and (eventually) acknowledge the merits of others around him.

Trace finds it very difficult to stay in one place, quickly getting antsy and grumpy whenever he isn't given the chance to explore, face new challenges or find some project to work on, and as a result, knows the basic facts of a great many places, but not much more, and has little in the way of sustainable hobbies, unless, of course, Adventuring counts.

Combat traits

Powers:

Trace is fairly agile and strong, but his abilities pale in comparison to most other adventuring sorts on their own.

Thankfully,
his signature boots and gloves (TET-001 "Exploration Gear") were designed by him to help him in the field. The boots give him enhanced speed and agility through bursts of force from the soles, allowing him to control his descent or launch himself higher. The gloves and the holographic interface in them are mostly for scanning and utility, giving him extra information on his surroundings that his natural abilities of scent and hearing cannot, but can also generate their own bursts of force for combat purposes or manipulating objects indirectly. (though the range is not quite enough for anything approaching useful telekinesis)

He has a number of other gadgets, of course, though most are based on information gathering and utility than outright combat.

Skybuoys (TET-002) are floating spheres with glowing red lines crossing around them about the size of a beach ball that scan and monitor a radius around them, sending their information remotely to his gloves, though their signal can be limited if he's underground or otherwise surrounded by stone or metal, and they currently have no movement capabilities beyond simply staying afloat in one location.

(More gadgets may be added later, older gadgets may be upgraded at notable moments or something.)

Strengths:

- Analytical mind and a quick study

- Complete faith in his abilities

- Exploration Gear's applications are very versatile
- Skilled information-gatherer and has many technologies designed to help him do so

- Enjoys the thrill of adventure, very difficult to frighten
- Determined

Weaknesses:

- Always thinks he is the smartest person in the room
- Egotistical

- Not especially strong without his Exploration Gear
- Exploration Gear's combat functions have very little range and are unspecialized

- High temper, easily flustered

- Finds it hard to be honest about feelings
- Terrible Liar

- Can ultra-focus on a single thing too much

Social information

He's made no friends or enemies as of yet, besides, of course, his parents, Trace Pennonspar Sr. and Summer Pennonspar, who he makes sure to keep in contact with throughout his journeys. He prefers to keep that information close to the chest, not for their safety or anything like that, but because it's kind of embarassing to admit.

History

The Pennonspars, despite the fancy name, were a fairly ordinary family of Jackals running a farm out in the countryside some distance from Station Square. Of course, a modern farm has it's share of technology, and Trace, even as a child, was always fascinated by it, turning to tinkering in an attempt to try to improve and understand the technology his parents used.

As he grew older, this simple fascination with technology and science became an obsession, and then a career path, focusing his studies in the areas of robotics, energy manipulation and scanning technologies, but... eventually he realized he was bored with simply learning, and had no intention of ever being in a boring lab, or teaching others directly in a classroom.

At this point, he'd heard too many stories of heroes and combatants and grand adventures, defeating ancient evils or mad scientists or whatever threat, and, through a combination of thrill seeking, a desire to prove himself and gain fame, and a sense of altruism that he should do more when the world has been in danger so many times, he decided that instead of continuing his studies, he would simply learn through practice, and explore the world on his own.
