The shapeshifter opened a portal. "Do you really want to do this?"

Azzar didn't say anything and just nodded. "You're either brave, stupid or a little of both," The shapeshifted said.

"Good luck master. Please don't die or get imprinted into this book." "I'll try" and then she walked into the portal.

The place she ended up in wasn't a tavern, not anymore. It was a lab, with equipment all around and various tables with bodies in various states of decay. Some of them moved, most of them did not.

The place was barely lit at all and on one of the tables near the window, there was an open journal.

"What sort of tavern is this? Looks more like a lab." Liela looked around and saw the open journal. She couldn't help but read what's inside.

The journal was a mixture of scientific logs and personal inquiries.

'Week 1561,

Twenty subjects were introduced to the new and improved formula. Promising, but ultimately unded with most subjects dying.

Mortality went down 4%, down from last week's 94%. Two subjects survived, although the compound still cannot be as a ward against the disease, as it had a 60% mortality rate on those uninfected.

Will try another compound once I get more test subjects next week.'

That was followed by something personal.

'I found someone, someone alive. After all those years...

Not alone anymore.

But I jinxed, I creeped her out even though I did not want to. I ran away

But I want her to stay. She reminds me of her...'

"I knew he isn't evil. He's been trying to cure this plague. But who do I remind him of?" Liela looked away from the journal.

She saw him there, looking at her with ominous silence, holding a large syringe/ bone saw combo.

"No, I won't subject you to that," he said and put the device on a nearby table, apporoaching her. "It's going slowly, but I have all the time in the world to find a cure."

"Artificing, the art branch of magic that teaches about breathing life into inanimate objects or simply playing God, if you will," he continued and pressed a button near the body. The twitching stopped and it appeared to be breathing like a regular, living thing. "So, what happens when something artificial isn't contained properly and starts leaking, page after page, until it finally manifests in the real world?"

"And my work is my stopping it from accomplishing that," the body caughed and opened its pitch black eyes. "My retrovirus, as you can see, works, but I wouldn't call what remains of the host previously taken by the plague alive per se." The subject let out a pained moan after Aubrey touched him.
