The Bilfrith Cover-Up Empty The Bilfrith Cover-Up

Post by Spekkal Wed Nov 25, 2015 7:07 pm

The city of Bilfrith. A good few hours train ride away from the standard city locations you often find in RPs. Far northward of the country, and considered a tourist destination to a small extent. Not because of the weather, because it IS in fact rather cold, considered significantly chilly, and at least once a month (if not weekly) it snows. Bilfrith is not a place you visit for the weather, unless you like to wear thick clothing on a day-to-day basis. Rather, it's for the history.

You see, it all started on the 'blizzard of '45', as they call it. Before the tragedy that was the blizzard, in the past Bilfrith was but a small mining town. However, rumours go that the miners disrupted a sealed cavern of a powerful ice spirit, and in its rage, it cursed the town to be trapped within an endless ice storm. There were fatalities, and those who could channel heat and fire were favoured to save lives. And although the ice spirit was eventually defeated by the fabled heroes of the town, the curse remained. And the townspeople realised that they could not depend on the convenient powers of others.

So eventually, the researchers of Bilfrith created an alternative method - an artificial power source nicknamed as 'elemental essence'; solidified elements that were comparable to powers. At first, it started off simple to fight off the storm. Fireplaces were infused with pyrokinesis, creating endless fires that could be adjusted accordingly. It was trapped into necklaces and general jewellery to create a source of heat for the wearer. Applied to ovens, stoves, and not long did Bilfrith's trouble with the wintry wonderland start to settle.

But it continued, and with time, the small town because an industrial city built on this essence. Healing essence was applied to plasters, electrical essence to phones and laptops and all devices that required it, drills and pickaxes infused with rock essence to allow an easier moulding of the environment. The possibilities were huge, and the income from this discovery was absurd. And as the years went on by, with more and more success, the curse of the ice spirit began to fade with time.

*

Now, within this city, there was of course the industrial area. And within the industrial areas, there are factories. And these factories, most of them, create what this city was built upon and relies upon. However, there's a specific factory that is rather large in comparison to the rest of them, spanning up several abandoned floors. Abandoned being the key word there. Very recently too. The cause of such abandonment was, and still is, unknown. Most didn't really care, as it was gradually running out of funding a few weeks before the workers all left at once. Which was odd, because a lot of money had been put into it, or at least that's what the mayor wanted. And now, it was a hushed topic, and that money had seemingly gone to waste. A few had gone missing during the mass quitting that took place exactly one week back, but that was something the city officials of Bilfrith didn't bat an eye at; there were more important things to concern themselves with after all. There were complaints from families, but none were answered. And none had a chance to ask why they left, for they were all arrested on the same next day.

You see, it was no secret at all that the factory created the solidified elemental essence that this very founding was built upon. With so many with powers, the plan these days was to create products that manipulated and exploited the powerless market. It was mass produced, and sent to less fortunate cities across the world. It had become a financial empire, and was somewhat corrupt from the power they had. This was considered a strong reason why the cover-up went so well, and why it was still unknown to this day.

However, people were determined. Those that had lost loved ones to this investigation sought some sort of revenge. And their revenge was... mighty daring. Some would say foolish. Most would say idiotic. For their revenge consisted of going to other cities, and placing up posters on the issue. That there was a mystery. That it needed to be solved. And although there was no cash prize, they were absolutely free to loot the place and keep what they found. There was no time or date either, only an address, but wouldn't it be hilarious and convenient if everyone appeared at the same time? Hint hint?

---

Today's weather was snow. Not a powerful, terrifying storm of white, but more a gentle shower. It was a common thing here, really. A light snow occasionally falling from the sky like little white friendliness pellets. The air was cold, however, and a single exhaled breath would make you feel like some sort of cool ice dragon. While yeah it was cool, it was also bloody freezing. So you better have wrapped up warm, because this was pretty standard.

Now the factory itself was tall and large. A modern building with an external appearance of metal platings. It was set out like a series of apartments and smaller buildings - various floors with glass windows and no overhanging roof. Instead, there were huge smoke stacks that were up top, with cylindrical towers dotted around the scene. It was slightly impressive, but standard stuff. Now, however, it was rather lonely. It had only been a week since activity stopped, but the lack of smoke and not a vehicle in sight within the car park just made it look... sad.

The only entrance in sight to the actual building was a singular small door up a tiny set of steps, probably locked. It was hilariously tiny considering the building size itself, and very underwhelming. To the side, there was an additional steel door that was most likely for vehicles going in and out, but other than that, those were the only two options.

It was, however, surrounded by a metal fencing. The door that allowed entry was locked via a passcode. But really, in this world, that was hardly to stop anyone. In fact, the lock was broken, and the door slowly swayed back and forth with the cold breeze, making that really obnoxious squeaking sound all doors do. Because the first to arrive was already there, and they weren't gonna let something like that stand in their way. Not like they had a choice in doing this, after all. They were on a mission.

And this specific person wasn't a person at all, but a robot. Well-built too. Not futuristic, but still modern and sleek enough to raise an eyebrow at. They were mobian shaped of course, with powerful steel limb and a tough metal body. Hilariously enough, however, was that they were wearing clothes. Around their neck was a scarf, and in addition they wore a brown western-esque trench-coat with pockets. Which was weird, cause robots can't feel cold. It was a robot. And this robot apparently thought they were a person.

Their eyes projected the appearance of slight annoyance, as they stared at that small door with their arms crossed. They seemed... reluctant. Perhaps not of the factory itself, but the fact that they had to go along with this because of their boss. They had a task, and they had to achieve it. That was a order. A metallic sigh left their non-existent mouth. How bad could it possibly be...?

However, the mechanical being didn't take a step forward. Instead, they simply waited a few more minutes. Just a few. Then they'd go in and get this over with. It's not like anyone else would show up then and ruin this entire plan of going in solo. What would the chances of that be anyway?

The Bilfrith Cover-Up Empty Re: The Bilfrith Cover-Up

And if only by chance, of course, another figure was moving briskly down the icy sidewalk. They didn't seem all too thrilled to be out in this weather, judging by their slightly hunched over position as they moved and the squinting of their eyes. They were well-bundled up from the looks of it, too, clearly looking to avoid leaving anything unnecessarily exposed to the cold weather.

If the figure had any hair, it was currently covered under a dark-colored ski hat. One thing that did stick out, quite literally, was a pair of short, very slightly curved horns protruding from the top of the hat. They also had on a rather large scarf that was not only wrapped around their neck, but also up around a muzzle perhaps just a bit shorter than the average canine's. This left only a pair of cerulean eyes to look over the wintery environment they were trekking through. Even behind them, they had wrapped up their long tail in what appeared to be a customized sleeve just for the purpose of keeping this person's rather thick-looking tail insulated as well. Several small bumps along the topside of the tail could be seen in varying size underneath the material as well. Granted, it only covered down almost to the very end before a bright splash of color broke the monotonous colors of the entire outfit, despite the layer of snow that had settled into it and across the rest of their clothing. A large tuft of hair tipped the tail, sporting what appeared to be a straight-up rainbow of colors on it. Whether it was simply a decoration added onto the tail sleeve or if it actually was real hair was difficult to determine.

And yet, despite all their attempts to keep warm, or supposedly, the figure's toes were exposed to the elements. Their long jeans allowed only part of their foot to be seen, but they appeared to have on a pair of black foot wraps on. The reason became quite evident, though, upon noting that this person had a set of large and sharp-looking claws on their feet. No doubt wearing shoes wasn't an easy option with those beasties scraping against the ground with every step.

A white cloud would occasionally drift back from where the scarf was wrapped around the person's face, dissipating into the air behind them and they glanced down past the bulky scarf and to their heavy dark grey coat. Their paws were currently stuffed into their pockets in some vain attempt to keep their extremities warm, no doubt. But the figure's right paw withdrew, holding what could only be assumed to be a mobile phone within their gloved grasp. One might note that the very tips of the fingers on these gloves were just open enough to allow a set of claws to remain out in the open.

A click of a button and the screen came to life, allowing quick observation of a map and verification that they were, indeed, headed in the right direction. It wasn't too much longer before they were moving along outside the metal fence. There was a soft snort that sent another cloud drifting off into the air as the fence was observed in passing. However, the figure paused when they reach the gate.

"Hrm...?"

The head tilted and eyes studied the lock. Had someone been here already? That was a bit discouraging... Might be worth a try to look around, though. Especially since getting in was made so much easier.

The door was pushed open, despite its creaks and protests and the figure moved in past it. Their tail only just swished far enough to the side to avoid the gate as it swung back to its previous place again behind them. They peered around the area, for only a couple of moments before noting that they weren't alone here. Eyes squinted a little further and a frown formed underneath the cover of the scarf.

"Guess someone else might have the same idea after seeing those flyers..." a voice muttered softly as they began to head towards this other other person, though the only thing really noted for the moment was that they were also sporting a long coat. Might as well make it known that they were both here and see if they had any extra information that might help while snooping about this place. No attempt was made to hide the sound of snow crunching underneath their clawed feet and the figure continued their approach, tail swaying back and forth behind them with the movement.

The Bilfrith Cover-Up Empty Re: The Bilfrith Cover-Up

Post by Uncanny-Illustrator Thu Nov 26, 2015 10:33 am

It was practically like this place was just /asking/  people to come in this day to explore and such. And thus there was a third person walking along the snow, close in track to the foot and robot leg prints that were left in the snow.

This third person was covered from head to toe, nothing shown at all and making it impossible to even predict the gender of the person.

What they were wearing at least seemed very warm, a quite high tech set or armor that was sleekly designed. The closed thing one could compare it to was what a motor cyclist would wear, including that helm which so closely resembled a motor one including a visor and everything. Except this visor was not allowing others to look back in, a mirrored surface it was, clearly a one way mirror dealio there.

And slowly they did close in on the other two, their dark colored armor standing out against that pure white snow, they seemed much more designed to blend in in a darker setting.

Another few steps as they came to a halt and observed the other two from behind. Seems like they weren't the only one here at all. They again it was sort of predictable but they regardless had not expected it full.

"Is this some secret meeting I am not aware off?" Spoke the third person, their voice clearly being distorted by the armor they wore, masking the voice's gender completely. "Reasons for being here?" They asked calmly in an inquisitive manner, clearly not meant as an order for them to tell. More a very genuine question.

Aaaand another person soon joined the crew to screw up the robot's plans completely.
...well, said person wasn't entirely sure if they wanted to JOIN as they didn't really have the idea of WHAT they were about to join. I don't think it'd stop them though as they were rather curious of new places. And while curiosity might've killed a cat, I wonder if it has a chance with a tiger!
A typically Mobian tiger at that, with colours green + golden stripes rather than black on orange. The tiger's height was not typically Mobian, in fact he seemed to be almost twice the size of your regular Sonic. Not a giant, but someone big for sure. To that there were wide shoulders and a few layers of clothing of course, which ended on a deep blue jacket and a white scarf covering the tiger's white freckled muzzle. There was also a rectangular bag hanging from his shoulder. Yada yada, and to end it off, a pair of golden eyes looking curiously around the area, yeah!
And he JUST so happened to be nearing the factory door as well, WOAH!
Aand then he stopped. Three people over there, up at the stairs. Well, the armoured one not on them yet but you know. And open metal door. In a completely empty place. Except for those people that is. Maybe... maybe he shouldn't be here?
Nonetheless, the tiger took a step forward, a raise of gloved finger, "..E... excuse me, were the-these doors.. su..pposed to be like th-that?" Either the cold was getting to that guy making him stutter his words a bit, or he was just a wuss.

The Bilfrith Cover-Up Empty Re: The Bilfrith Cover-Up

It was only a few minutes of contemplation within this gentle blizzard before others began arriving. The mechanical creation's hand had only just reached the locked door-handle of the entrance, before the sounds of crunching snow entered his ears. Well. To say 'ears' was a stretched, as observation would make note of - he lacked them entirely. For he was a robot. Another metallic sigh left them, and their steel fingers flexed in blatant irritation. Of course. Of course this would happen; fate always loved to burst through the door and yell 'no' just when things were going okay for him. His hand rested on his head, pinching at the bridge of a noseless face, before turning around, and sprawling his arms over the railings of the set of stairs.

There were three. Not one, but three. The first was wrapped up tightly, no doubt to keep themselves warm in this stupid weather. Admittedly, he found them a little intimidating. It wasn't going to stop him, not at all, but they seemed to have that aura of someone who knows what they were doing. And his eyes narrowed.

He was about to speak, but the second arrived. The bot already saw them approaching, but he didn't expect such an armoured figure. He couldn't tell the species, but they looked... official. That they meant business. And when they spoke, he couldn't even tell if it was a boy or a girl. "I'm just exploring," they replied to the newcomer. The robot's voice was... monotone. Emotionless. It wasn't even a voice, but more as if a computer was just reading words out. And as such, if this one asked a question, you wouldn't be able to tell, "What are you two-... three. What are you three doing here."

And to answer the tiger's question? "No. But I broke them open," he replied, raising a single hand, and then pointing at the broken lock. Well, he was open to admit it at least. Pulling up his scarf and slipping his hands into his pockets, they walked down the stairs to approach the sudden and unexpected group. And for added effect, their brown trenchcoat wavered slightly with the passing wind. It looked cool.

The Bilfrith Cover-Up Empty Re: The Bilfrith Cover-Up

Post by Froshana Sat Nov 28, 2015 5:16 am

As the robot turned around, the first figure's eyes squinted slightly. That... wasn't apparently the average alley cat or hedgehog typically seen out and about. Or if it was, maybe they had on some sort of strange ear-flattening armor?

The sound of approaching footsteps caught their attention and a half-turn back allowed them a glance at another person approaching. The blue eyes widened slightly at the sight of someone who was definitely wearing armor. But that was really the only detail they could gather. There was no indication of species or gender. The distortion their helmet provided to their voice didn't help either as they asked their question. Brief movement underneath the first figure's scarf implied they were opening their mouth to speak, but instead the robot gave a reply.

The bundled up person looked back up at the sound of the response. Their brow furrowed under their hat. Hm. That wasn't so much distorted like the voice of this second person as it was... digitized. At the mention of three people here now, the first person turned to look back towards the gate. Indeed, there was someone else there, a tiger from the looks of him.

Great. More felines.

Footsteps coming back down the stairs drew their attention back to the robot and they finally also spoke. "Just in the area. Saw a flyer about this place and thought I'd check it out." The voice was... feminine? Feminine enough, if not just a little rough around the edges. Sure, let's go with female. She paused and the tail curled back around to one side as she looked at each person in turn.

"...Isn't that what you're all here for?"

'Maybe it would be too weird a coincidence if we all saw the same posters and showed up here at the exact time, though...' she considered in her mind. It's not like there was a set date or anything on the flyer, after all. But if they weren't here because they had seen the same poster she had... what were they here for?

Calmly did the armored one turn their head to the big tiger, giving a small nod in greeting, almost like they just straight out were ignoring he robot's reply and question right back at.

At least it seemed like that till that visor went back in their direction. "I am here for work." Well that was a simple answer, at least they seemed to be honest? Though with that distorted voice it was not easy to tell.

They didn't quite seem to want to wait for the reply of the tiger though as they made their way to the door with it's broken lock to kick it open. Talk about being a brute and not wasting time.

Though before stepping inside they did turn to the rest. 'If I may suggest, lets take this all inside and out of the snow and cold." And with those words the completely covered up one stepped inside.

"Exploring!" A simple answer to the robot's question. "I-I heard quite a bit about this city, so I decided to come a-and look around on my own!"
A pause as the tiger glanced about the group again.
"And, I was going to explore this place too, b-but... it'd seem, that, a-ah..." His smile faded quickly. An armoured person. And a robot. That... didn't.. look good. "..I mean.. i-if.. it's something important, I, er, I can leave, i-if... if need be."
A glance at the only person in the group other than him that a normal voice. Well they seemed more like.. a person. "...Flyers?" He frowned slightly. "I-I've seen some, but I didn't really look at them.. I-I just read about this place in uh, some book. I-it's got an interesting history for sure!" He rubbed his arm awkwardly before nodding to the armoured person, "Oh, th-that sounds good!" Pause. "...That's.. i-if it's okay for me to.. join. Er, I-I understand if.. if not."
Dude, chill. No pun intended, there is enough chill in this place than needed anyway. But chill.

The Bilfrith Cover-Up Empty Re: The Bilfrith Cover-Up

And so it was that the four of them-
No. Wait. Something didn't seem right here. Quick headcount?
One, two, three, four... five? Oh, I guess there must've been a bit of a miscount before.

And so it was that the five of them began-
No, no, that doesn't sound right at all. Let's count again.
One, two, three, four... no, five. Definitely five. That's... odd. I swear that just a second ago it was just four people here.
Maybe I just keep miscounting, let's see who we've got...

Okay, first to arrive was the large mechanical man. He'd sorta opened the entry for everyone else, having broken through the lock of the front gate, and allowed passage through. He seemed an... odd figure. A machine all dressed up like a person.

Who else? Oh yes, of course, the big bundled up figure! It was hard to tell much about them from a glance. They almost came across as just a big pile of walking clothes, with bits and pieces of person just sorta... poking through here and there - in particular, the noticable claws on their feet. They seemed to be quite the ponderous sort, having given consideration to the oddity that had been the vague posters seemingly bringing such a group all at the same time.

Speaking of individuals who were all covered up, there was the armoured figure. They seemed to have a big question mark hanging over their head as to their identity, everything about them - right down to their gender - being held as a well-controlled mystery. They seemed to've taken some lead on the situation, having kicked in the front entry to the building.

Next there was the dark grey wolf, white designs dyed into her fur. She'd seemed to simply appear at some point among the group, clad in all black. Her monochrome appearance, matching up with her lack of any real movement or conversation made her look like an old black-and-white photograph when stood against the snow. The only hint that she was present as anything more than that was the occasional wind rustling through her fur, deep amber eyes staring neutrally as she stood among the group.

Then lastly was the tiger fellow - rather large, and very nervous. He seemed to feel out of place in the group, and didn't seem exactly certain if he should be there at all. It looked like - with the others being how they were - he was in for a lot more than he'd bargained for.

...Aaand that was it. All five of them. Ready to explore.
