The Solution

Plot : Central City was enjoying yet another period of peace and wellbeing, but as all things good, it was too perfect to last and out of the blue, hundreds of citizens became ill. Inicially, it was thought to be a seasonal disease like the common cold or influenza, but when even healthy and fit citizens fell ill, the police took an interest.

After a brief investigation, it was found that all the ill had one thing on common - they were poor and almost all of them fell ill whilst living in the poorer parts of the city. From this, the police deducted it was no mere coincidence and immediately enlisted the help of every single scientist the city had to find a cure for this lab-created disease, or at least lessen the disease's spread amongst the city folk.

The situation took a turn from bad to worse when during clinical tests, the experimental cure not only had no effects on the virus, but nearly killed the patients it was tested on. Judging from the violent reaction the virus had to a potential cure, the scientists instead turned their attention to work on a vaccine that would decrease the chances of getting the virus.

Whilst the experimental vaccines were being distributed throughout the city, the city's police department chief got a mysterious fax with an odd message. It read "Resistance is futile, but very entertaining." Afterwards, the police chief was informed via a phone call that the truck carrying the vaccines had an accident and while the scientists and the driver survived, all of the vaccines were destroyed.

Out of desperation, the police started hiring private investigators, as they were both out of ideas and understaffed. Will you help them find the one responsible and find a cure for the disease, or will you add more wood to the furnace and watch the city burn?

------------------------------------------------------------------

Name had to be changed from 'Noxious' to 'The Solution', as the original was too short :/

Re: The Solution

It finally happened. Even after all of their efforts, the city that he and his comrades fought to protect had finally been driven into near chaos. The easy thing to tell was that the city was on the brink of becoming extinct. What wasn't so clear, and something that brought much concern to Shadow, was whether or not this would affect the rest of the planet. Station Square got plenty of visitors, so it was no doubt that someone would wander off and get themselves intensely sick.

What was worse still was the sick were getting sicker, and the poor weren't safe. It was only obvious that the poor and homeless would be affected first, but it wouldn't be long before the rest of them, Mobians and Humans alike, would be affected by this disease. At this moment, it was very unnerving for Shadow that his blue rival still didn't seem like he was getting involved. At this point, the actions of the blue hedgehog seemed to dwindle, which made him wonder if even Sonic himself was affected.

If that were the case, then he had to be the one to step up. If Shadow couldn't stand up and resist this disease, which his immortality supposedly equipped him to do, then no one could. There was still some kind of possibility that not even he was immune to this illness. If that was the case then he saw very little hope of his success. But then again, very little hope was enough for this hedgehog to face an entire army of aliens almost single handily.

He knew he had to help. Through some sort of event, Shadow would get to the bottom of this illness and put a stop to whoever was behind this, even if he wasn't able to do if for Maria's illness. The black hedgehog seemed to tower over the city even in his short stature on a rather short ledge. Once departing from it, he took a look around the once bright and happy city. Things escalated far too quickly for anyone to predict. For once, Shadow admitted that there was no one to blame but the person who caused it. The authorities were able to figure out that this was not a disease that was produced naturally, or even by ill spreading creatures.

No, someone deliberately set up this illness. But who, and why? These were all answers Shadow had to find. All of Station Square, and possibly the planet, depended on it.

It's sad. The city changed drastically. He remembered perfectly how it was before this. Citizens would go everywhere with a lot of things to do. Jobs to work on. Friends to meet. The possibilities were as many as people there was. Now, everyone is scared. They fear how the disease spreads. They fear who is infected. Some even fear the air itself in belief of an airborne pathogen. The streets are much more emptier now.

But how it spreads? That was the main question this avian wanted to know it's answer. According from a book he has, the three most possible causes would be infection, airborne or foodborne. If he could, at least, know this, maybe he could manage to stop the rising number of affected. Unfortunately, this was an unknown lab-created disease, so maybe not even among these three possible answers hides the correct one.

The look of the few citizens that were still outside their homes made Zephyr more than willing to help get rid of this invisible madness. But, how? He couldn't but feel uneasy as well. What if he becomes ill? What would he do then? Zephyr shook off these thoughts trying to focus on the task at hand.

The green avian was sitting on a rooftop's edge, leafing through his book trying to find something that would help him find a clue. Any clue. For the sake of the people. For everyone's sake.

In the meantime, the situation went from worse to worst. Power went off in the whole city and people, both sick and healthy, had no idea what happened. When the emergency generators started up shortly after the outage, power was brought back to town hall, as well as other building belonging to city officials. The thinly spread out police force was informed of what happened and ordered to calm down the citizens. During this, the scientists who worked tirelessly on the cure for the second day found something unnerving.

Routine tests confirmed their greatest fear - everything was contaminated. The food, the water, the air. But, in a somewhat brighter light, they found out that some of the citizens were completely immune to the disease, but not because of something in their blood - the disease simply didn't 'choose' to infect them.

The chief of the police got another fax while all of this happened. This time, it read 'The second phase will cleanse the city." Afterwards, he was informed that the virus's symptons raised in severity, making them periodically lose memories, scream nonsense and attempt to attack the medical personel, in that order. As such, the patients now had to be put under heavy sedatives and restrained.

Unlike the first fax, however, these started appearing in the city as well as posters. People reported seeing hooded figures putting them up, but each and every were gone before the police could catch them and question them. Perhaps Shadow and Zephyrr could try to catch one of them and have a little 'chat'. If they aren't affiliated with whoever created the disease, they are responsible for spreading panic.

Re: The Solution

The lights suddenly flashed off catching Shadow off guard for a mere second before he realized what happened and straightened himself up. It didn't take long for the lights to go back on in which the black hedgehog spotted a strange looking mobian that looked like a strange bird. The only reason why the bird caught his attention at all was because he was one of the few people or mobians that were healthy besides some of the authorities or scientists. How come he wasn't sick yet, he had to wonder. None the less, his attention was only grabbed for a few moments before losing interest.

However, a strange person in a hood, who also seemed rather healthy, lurked around the shadows rather mysteriously. Shadow's experience told him not to judge a book by its cover, especially considering who he was. However, the reason behind keeping his/her identity a secret very much confused him. If they were trying to help them through this epidemic, why would they do so undercover? None of the other investigators were doing so. So why was this one?

This meant one of two things. Either, one, this person was a secret agent assigned to this case and ordered to keep his identity a secret in case the enemy was on to them. Or, two, they weren't trying to help, and actually working for whoever was behind this horrible crime.

Though the striped hedgehog couldn't be certain of either, he could tell that the figure was causing chaos. One of the posters being placed all over town was in the figure's hand, causing the hedgehog to glare at the figure before trying to approach them without being seen. He assumed that the bird wouldn't dare get in his way, but there were consequences waiting for him if he did.

Nothing. The book couldn't contain enough info to clarify anything he knew about this disease. A bit frustrated, Zephyr closed the book abruptly, but leaved it softly aside, trying to remain calm. After all, a cool head takes better decisions.

Suddenly, the avian spotted a mysterious figure covered by a hood that seemed suspicious. It was carrying papers, so maybe is one of those that put the posters about a "second phase cleansing the city." That sure was like a mental bomb for the infected and healthy alike. After all, this could only get even worse if the illness isn't stopped.

To his surprise, he also sighted a black hedgehog approaching the suspect. Zephyr was going to ask the hooded figure himself but, maybe it would be better to see what that hedgehog is going to do. Hopefully, nothing violent. In case it's true that guy is spreading all those posters, it should be delivered to justice. He or she may not be involved directly to this chaos, but public disorder and spread of terror among the townsfolk were crimes that, at this difficult times, were nothing to let go.

Anyway, for now, he'll watch them from afar. Zephyr would hesitantly let pass of a bit of intimidation in order to get info, but if things start going wild, he would take action. Everyone's innocent until proven otherwise. That, and the possibility of avoiding violence.

The mysterious hooded figure stopped in its tracks near one of the lamp posts and looked around. It then started glueing the poster the lamp post, whistling while it was at it, as if were just another day in its schedule.

After it was done, another figure who looked almost the same approached it out of nowhere, whispered something and pointed at the rooftop. The figure who had put the poster on the lamp post in its place looked up to where Shadow was supposedly standing and let out a growl. Oddly enough, its slightly lifted hood didn't even show a hint of its face and merely showcased pitch black darkness. Afterwards, the second figure disappeared in a puff of black smoke.

A few seconds after the first figure's growl, it let out a deafening shriek and started running, leaving behind transparent afterimages. This was odd, considering none of the citizens reported ever seeing any of them running. Perhaps this one was different.

Nevertheless, whatever it was, it was heading for the metro tunnels and considering how complex they were, it would only be a matter of seconds before both Shadow and Zephyr would lose it there. Haste was now required of them.

Re: The Solution

Post by Shadow on Mon Jul 20, 2015 11:03 pm

Shadow knelt over the edge of the building as the second figure appeared by the first, whispering something into his ear. Just as the second figure pointed into Shadow's direction, the first made eye contact with the black hedgehog. At least, he would have if their eyes were visible. This happened so fast that the speed demon was unable to duck out of view and hissed for letting himself be seen. Then, to the Ultimate Lifeform's surprise, the second figure disappeared in a cloud of smoke, stunning Shadow since there was no way the figure could have used Chaos Control. Another distraction was a high pitched screeching sound that forced the black hedgehog to cover his sensitive ears, and teeter a bit in dizziness from the annoying sound.

However, he managed to snap out of it fast enough to see the figure try to retreat. A sense of panic rose into grew into the hedgehog's stomach, causing him to push himself onto his feet and skate down the wall of the building, running after the figure. Even though Shadow was the second fastest thing alive, for some reason he had a hard time catching up with the elusive figure. "Wait!" he called out in desperation, as he reached out a hand at the figure trying to grab at his hood finally managing to get close enough to do so.

The striped hedgehog gritted his teeth and grunted as he desperately tried to keep up with the figure, though it seemed that speed wasn't the issue. There was no way this person was faster than he or Sonic, so there had to be a different reason why Shadow was struggling. Overthinking the possibilities may have been his down fall as the momentum caused the black hedgehog to fall over on his face, something that rarely happened. The desperation of the situation caused him to over think and lose focus. However, that same desperation caused him to recover just as quickly, accelerating at full speed once again.

The speed to the events stunned the avian, only to snap out after the screech. One thing he noticed was that not even a single part of their faces were even slightly visible. They were kinda far, but that darkness isn't natural.

Then, he realized the black hedgehog was running, most likely chasing the suspect. Zephyr wanted to follow as well but the speed they left made him wonder if it was even worth it. As such, he put his book in a pocket and jumped down. Before touching ground, he used a bit of his wind skills to land softly. Then, he arrived at the lamp post where that thing put a poster. Thinking it could be useful somehow, he ripped off the paper. Since the glue wasn't dry yet, the poster came out without effort. He put it in the same pocket where he put the book and then started flying up to search for both the chaser and the chased.

In his mind, too many questions kept rising, so as he looked around in the way they went, he tried to stay to the facts. Unnatural dark faces, second mysterious figure vanishes in a black fog while the first runs away, spread of panic-inducing posters, that strange screech... Zephyr sensed that this was way beyond a mad scientist with contacts with this creatures. More answers were required.

He couldn't let this chance slip by, so he kept searching from the sky as to where they were, a little panicked that he may be too slow.

Re: The Solution

Post by Relative Degree on Tue Jul 21, 2015 3:21 pm

The faceless figure gave Shadow quite a chase, going through narrow streets, underpasses, overpasses, viaducts. And it showed no signs of stopping. It just kept going where its legs took it. It wasn't trying to escape, it was trying to outrun Shadow by making him too tired to carry on. Then, when he was all tired and defenceless, it would attack him.

However, this plan fell apart rather quickly, as Shadow too showed no sings of stopping and was actually catching up. As the hooded figure made its way to the sixth or seventh block away from the one it was first seen in, it started slowing down and came to a stop when it found itself in a dead end in one of the side streets. It turned to the hedgehog, but instead of growling or producing any more of those loud shrieks, it just collapsed.

It looked to be from sheer exhaustion, but a closer look would be required to prove or disprove that. Whatever it was that stopped it from running away, Shadow now had someone he could interrogate and get some leads on whoever was causing the chaos.

Re: The Solution

Post by Shadow on Wed Jul 22, 2015 7:14 am

The black hedgehog skidded to a halt when he realized that his opponent had been stopped by an obstacle in the path. That was good enough for him, considering the fact that he had the figure cornered. However, the project knew better than to assume that the hooded figure wouldn't try something to get away from him. Or perhaps, the figure wanted Shadow to think that he had them cornered. Caution was indeed an order for him to approach the mysterious foe.

Gradually taking one foot in front of the other, Shadow stared down his foe before they did something rather strange: they collapsed. To the Ultimate Lifeform's shock, the hooded figure fell to the ground as if it had fainted. But Shadow hadn't even touched the guy, so what happened? With the possibility of this scene being a trap in mind, the clever hedgehog stood over the fallen figure trying to get a better look at him to see what was wrong with him.

Deciding that it would be better just to start asking questions rather than wonder what he was doing, Shadow began his interrogation. "Alright buddy, there are a few questions I'm going to ask, and you're going to answer them without giving me any problems." His eyes narrowed at the pathetic creature that was laying before him. "Otherwise I'll be forced to beat the truth out of you." He was very serious. Nothing he said that moment was theoretical. He had full intentions on beating up the figure if they didn't decide to cooperate.

With a worried look in his face, the avian flew above some building searching for running figures. When he spotted them both, he landed in another building's rooftop. To his surprise, the hooded one was lying on the floor. Fearing he was late, Zephyr though that the black hedgehog had already harmed the suspect.

Quickly, he jumped to a lower structure and kept observing, close enough to hear normal talk from the alley, but unable to hear any kind of whisper. He really hoped that the mysterious figure was unharmed, but didn't want to intervene until he saw the violence with his own eyes, so he could be sure he was doing the right thing.

Zephyr wasn't happy with the stranger's words, but if he stops him, maybe the suspect would try to run away again. And, in need of answers about the illness, he wasn't sure about what to do. How much it would be risked for the salvation of the city? Beating a possibly innocent guy? It was just wrong, but if it could save lives...

Despite the threat of being beaten up, the hooded figure didn't make even the slightest sound. Instead, a small red puddle started forming where its nose would be. It expanded at a slow pace and everyone who's seen it before would know that it was blood. Nosebleeds weren't all the serious and surely didn't knock people out. Perhaps it was something else and the nosebleed was merely the only symptom that was visible.

Nevertheless, the figure was no good to Shadow in this state, as he couldn't get any info out of it. One of the options was carrying it to some clinic, waiting 'till it gets better and then do his thing. However, since the situation in the city was getting worse by the minute, he'd have to think of something quick to wake the runner up.

Shadow had a strange sense of unease as he looked down at the creature seemingly having some sort of seizure, dying or whatever. At first he thought that the figure was trying to pull some stunt to try and make a get away, but then the black hedgehog realized that there was no way he could be if he was suddenly bleeding. What was up with him? Shadow gritted his teeth, scrunching his eyes a bit in confusion. This was certainly a day full of surprises, wasn't it? Shadow actually couldn't figure out what to do, and that happened so rarely he didn't even remember the last time that happened.

"Hey, what's wrong?" he asked, not really knowing what to do. He knelt on one knee and started shaking the guy, trying to see if he'd get a response. For cause the civilians fear, Shadow would have been more than willing to leave the guy there to deal with whatever it was that he had, but he needed answers ASAP. Scratching the back of his head, Shadow scanned the area to try and see if there was anyway to get the figure to a hospital or something. However, his logic took over the operation and reminded him that there were no stable hospitals nearby. Not with this dangerous epidemic.

Deciding that this was the best he could do for the moment, Shadow just continued to try and wake the guy up by shaking him, lifting the guy up and slapping him, checking his pulse, but the hedgehog was at a complete blank. Shadow was not used to being at a blank...

Zephyr just kept looking at them, worried about the hooded guy's health, until he realized there was some kind of red liquid below the possible suspect. "Wait..." He mumbled trying to see what was that. And a sudden logic conclusion surprised him. "...Is that blood!?" The avian jumped down quickly right next to the hedgehog and pushed him softly to keep him from disturbing the most likely wounded figure, now fallen on the floor, still immobile.

As a proper adventurer, he knows how do first aids, even though he is disgusted just by looking at blood. In a state of controlled panic, Zephyr lifts softly the patient and checks the red pool just to make sure it's blood. And it was, no doubt.

With a not-so-good face and hasted reactions, he removes the hood of the strange thing he was holding. Maybe now he can see his or her face. Even though Zephyr seemed very affected because of the blood, his wish to help was much more stronger. He could get rid of the blood later, but better to not even touch it, if possible.

It was a lioness, with her whole face spray-painted to a jet black colour. She also had glasses and a veil of the same colour and together, this, along with the hood, gave the illusion of the 'runner' being faceless. Whether or not she applied this makeup by herself or someone helped her was a question best asked for later. Oddly enough, in stark contrast to the shaking and slapping, Zypher's actions actually woke her up.

"Where-?" she wheezed, putting the glasses away and slowly opening her eyes. "Who-?" Her eyes were bloodshot, but instead of just a few red smudges here and there, they were almost completely red. She tried getting up, but fell. After the fall, small red dots started appearing on the ground and blood started dripping from her ears as well. Whatever was the thing she was infected with, it was fast, very fast. One would even say so fast, that there's high chance she'll die before they get any info from her. Was what they were seeing phase 2? Was a different disease altogether? Those were just the tips of the iceberg.

But what if this was the plan? What if the runners' sole purpose was to put a poster somwhere, wait for a signal, collapse and then die, spreading the new and/or improved disease further?
