Subway Malfunction Empty Subway Malfunction

Post by Funkydude527 on Thu Oct 02, 2014 2:59 am

On his way to catch the 8:10 AM train into downtown, Sully makes the decision to grab a a small cinnamon roll from a vendor as a walking breakfast. As he makes his way down the steps, he swallows, and examines the roll. That was pretty good! That examination, however, costs him his step. He trips, stumbles, and runs into a persimmon canine. Barely managing to grip the railing and preventing further damage to his surroundings, he swears in a language unknown to all but one in the stairwell. He quickly moves into an apology "Oh, sorry miss! Just tripped there!"

Amber didn't know how long she'd been walking. Drifting here and there and taking in the sights, the sounds, the smells. She must have walked all around the city without tire or even the slightest hint of an ache. Perhaps her feet were throbbing and her muscles were bleeding from the lack of rest. From all the standing up and sneaking around to evade crowds and police officials. Jumping up onto ledges on alleyways and practicing a bit of her parkour abilities on the rooftops of shorter buildings, hopping on one onto another as if it were a giant obstacle course. It passed time and sitting around in her apartment all day just did not appeal to her. She had an ideal 8 hour rest and a full stomach. So yes, perhaps her entire body was aching and begging for rest. Yet she wouldn't know. During the development of her thermokinesis, most of her nerves were killed, leaving her without a sense of touch and utterly numb. Feeling no heat, no pain, no texture. How was she supposed to even react when a fox suddenly ran into her in the subway?

What it felt like, was a nudge. A pull backwards and a slight 'thump'. However upon his exclamation, the persimmon wolf only jerked back more, her dark persimmon ears flattening to her head as if a canon had gone off right in front of them. She shut her amber colored eyes tightly, the brown scarf she wore around her neck and over her white muzzle hiding the cringe stretched across her lips. Her hand reached up to touch one of her ears, feeling the dull ring reverberate around her brain as her tail went between her legs for a moment. Yes, because of her lack of speech, the wolf had spent most of her life listening. Thus her hearing grew from the standard wolf hearing to one which is oversensitive. This aided her greatly in her profession as an assassin, yet like her power, it also backfired tremendously.

What a terrible day to leave behind her earplugs...

After a slight shake of her head, her bangs and low ponytail swaying with the movement of her head, Amber slowly opened her eyes to gaze at this stranger, eyelids falling half closed once again, she merely gave a court nod, and not a single word left her mouth.

Sully gave a weak smile. At least she did not seem injured. Terrified, maybe, but unscathed. Righting himself with a heave of the arm, he bounded to his feet and looked up at the wolf. Grimacing down and dusting off his tie quickly, he was suddenly quite acutely aware of his height. The steps did not help the fact that he was already a good half-head shorter than Amber.

Looking up at the taller source of the collision, Sully was about to smile and go on his merry way until he noticed the expression on her face. It was downright hearbreaking. She seemed awfully frazzled. Putting his hands up, palms out, he said "Hey now, are you alright?" His face indicated that he was genuinely concerned, and wished to help.

Unfortunately, his gesture only managed to cause her to shrink back more, eyes widening somewhat in alarm as her ears flattened more to her head. Amber was not a social creature. She did not recognize kind behavior, for all her life she was treated badly, formally at the most. However, because of this rising alarm, the heat around her rose slightly, though one would probably think it was just the crowd releasing a combination of body heat, thus making it hotter. Amber colored eyes gazing at Sully with contempt, she once again nodded. Only nodded.

"Alright then...." Sully's voice was laced with just a tiny bit of confusion. This girl seemed.... Off somehow. Clearing his throat, he turned and continued down the stairwell. Well this was awkward. Judging by the direction of her travel, they were probably on the same train. Loosening his tie, he noted the heat in the subway. At least it was a dry heat.

Brows furrowed and lips pulled into a frown, Amber watched the fox away. She waited until he was a distance away before continuing her long strides. They were going to be in the same train, it seemed. Well, better pick a different coach. However, she was squeezed in tight by the crowd apparently, as she barely had space to move. A sense of claustrophobia swelled in her stomach and she was forced in the direction Sully was going. Geez... She hoped she wouldn't bump into him again. She was an assassin. It was unethical to meet the same person twice. In any time range.

Unless she was married to that person. But that wasn't the case now was it?

Sully grumbled inwardly as he got churned about by the crowd. Public transit may be free in Station Square, but it was not exactly pretty. He got elbowed by a raven in a leather jacket, and then slapped upside the head by a sleep-deprived raccoon's mewling kid. Finally admitting defeat, he moved into the next car back. It was not much better, but at least the crowd looked more tired and more amenable than a screaming toddler.

He was just about to settle into the standing position on the car when he noticed a face. Oh no. Not again. That woman from before was in this coach. Deciding that it couldn't be helped, he turned the other way and settled back into his morning grog. Hopefully she did not notice him. Then again, this morning had not been particularly lucky up to this point.

The train rattled to life, and she was stuck inside a crowd of people. Despite not being able to feel the arms and backs pressed against her form, the amount of living beings was an eyesore. Among that crowd however... The fox she'd run into earlier. Immediately her ears flattened to her head, a frown pulling at her lips. Though no one could see it. Her scarf covered up her muzzle well. The only way one could tell her expression was through her eyes and the creases of her brows. And her ears, of course.

Amber colored eyes watched as Sully turned around, giving his back to her. This caused an uncomfortable feeling in her chest. Something that suffocated her and made her brows furrow. 'Annoyance.' She told herself. But then again, what did she care? The train must have been zipping for a good ten minutes when it halted again, opening it's doors to drop off passengers. How relieved was she, to have all that many people leave...

...and yet the Fox still remained. He dared not turn around. The Hub was always the big drain point, but his stop was still four down the line. Was she still on? Oh god, that would seem really bizzare. Still, she was just a wolf that seemed too afraid of her own shadow to do any harm to him. Building up his small sense of nerve, he turned around.

Of course. Working up his grin he said "We can't seem to shake each other today, eh?" His voice still had the slight accent, neigh imperceptable. He was welcoming and jovial, though. No use in being foes if they rode the same train to work.

But how wrong was he. This was not a ride to work, nor was she as timid as she seemed. But of course, she didn't care what he would think. She didn't care what anyone would think. Her ears picked up his voice, and she merely glanced at him from the corner of her eyes. No response came from her. None at all.

Just a glance from her side of the coach.

Sully's smile wavered slightly, a rarity. That stare was downright chilling. Just enough acknowledgement to confirm she heard him, not enough to show she cared that much. Well, he was already committed to a conversation. Sully shivered off the willies. After internally remarking at the lonesome attitude prevalent in the big city, he sighed and continued.

"So, uh, are you getting on at Fifth?"

A blink.

As quickly as he'd attracted her attention, he lost it as well. The wolf merely turned her head to the opposite direction of him, staring at a poster that was hung by the door that connected the train's coaches. Her posture calm, yet regal and tall, she acted as if he hasn't said anything at all. However, she was merely waiting for the train to halt, not wavering at all, and let off more of the passengers on the coach. That left only him and her. And only then did she lift her hands to sign to him, "Getting off at the very last stop."

Now Sully was not a fan of Lewis Carrol, but this wolf was quickly pulling him down an enigmatic and proverbial rabbit-hole. Why on earth did she wait until they were alone? Was he about to get mugged?

As she signed at him, Sully' cursory knowledge from a crash course his twin gave him snapped into focus. He picked up the gist. Curiouser and curiouser. He looked around the now-empty car, as a new thought flashed through his mind. Was he about to get mugged by a mute?

Shaking the thought off, he cleared his throat and responded in his usual, gregarious manner. "Work or pleasure?"

His worries were not odd. In fact, it made quite a lot of sense. With the mystery shrouding thick around her, like her scarf. She used her hand to tug said scarf higher up on her muzzle, not allowing him to see most of her face. Ears twitched when he spoke again, now she turned her head slightly to look at him better, and she noticed his height. It surprised her really.

The autumn eyes remained glued on him for a couple of minutes, nearly piercing figurative holes in his form. She lift her hand and signed once again, "Neither."

The Fox shrank even more under the stare. It was like she could see into his soul. He started to grow suspicious. Very few individuals acted like this. His mind began to churn, as he debated her potential nature as a powered individual. His eyes sainted slightly, and his left ear twitched. It was a nervous tic of his.

He leaned against the pole, one hand wrapped around the bracer above. His voice, a little less jovial and a little more normative than before, responded immediately to the sign. "What for then?"

"Passing the time." She signed to him while moving her gaze back to the ground. "Don't have much to come home to."

The train rattled and bounced, but she remained steady on her feet. That would only heighten Sully's suspicions really. Not everyone had that level of balance. Until she signed once again, "Not easy being a parkour athlete."

Ah. Thats why she holds herself funny. Just a person with a past and an interesting talent is all. Quite a few of those in this town, that's for certain. Still, it was not too common to find a fellow parkour artist. Steadying himself as the cars slowly rose up and became and elevated rail, Sully's ears perked up at the sign of parkour. He grinned wildly. "Ever done the Spillway Run?"

Judging from the wild grin and immediate change in body language, she knew she had him fooled. Despite what she told him being true at the same time. Yes, she was passing the time, and yes she did not have much to come home to (well she had a wonderful apartment but no one to come home to). But she was not a full time parkour athlete. One does not just announce themselves to be an assassin. With powers at that. Her past taught her well that the world did not take so kindly to powered individuals in reality.

Yet parkour was her favorite way of passing time, so she had no need to lie at all. "Yes. Several times."

Sully remembered his go at it vividly, and flashes of vertigo associated with the infamous 'Deck' leaped to mind. While most of the Spillway Run took place along the side of titanic concrete staircase that made up its eponymous locale, 'The Deck' was the gut-churning base where the canyon could be forded.

Two routes existed. The first was the slower, and bridged the gap via a small, vine ridden maintenance catwalk sandwiched between two massive crosspipes; it was the safer route, by far. The alternative was the quintet of concrete columns that jutted out from the silt basin. These baffles, and their associated fifty foot drop, were level with either side at their inchwidth, typically wet peaks. A fully committed series of top speed, pinpoint accurate jumps was needed to clear the gap this way. It was much faster, but most did not have a deathwish, so the route was mostly unused. 'Hopping the Scotch', as it was called, was the mark of a master freerunning artist far beyond Sully's skills.

So, naturally, he asked "Catwalk or Hopscotch?"

She remembered going for both routes once upon a time. And her favorite was clear. "Catwalk is too crowded. So Hopscotch.

All the bodies climbing and bouncing, often nearly hitting each other. The noises, the loud thumps and yells. She disliked that too. Indeed, the hopscotch is far more favorable for her.

Sully's jaw dropped slightly, and his brows furrowed. He stared at the wolf for a solid half-minute before silently mouthing an invocation of the divine and a four letter word synonym for fecal matter.

This broke into an impressed laugh at her insanity. She was nuts, but his kind of nuts. This wolf was alright. Sully expressed his opinion in words. "You are freaking loony! Seriously, we have to catch up sometime and run somewhere. Whats your name?"

His sudden laugh was shocking. She even flinched and jumped back in surprise. Despite this, she tried to act casual. Like any normal people would. She gave a court nod at his statements, and then hesitated when he asked her name. It took a full minute for her to finally sign, "Amber."

He kept his grin and nodded in return. "Cool name. I'm Sully."

His head tilted subtly sideways. She was an odd sort, that's for sure. Then again, so was he. Sully's tail coiled behind him pensively. "So, uh, you know where I am every weekday morning now if you want to bet in touch. Let me know if you ever want to grab a coffee or something."

The wolf gave a court nod, keeping her gaze on the floor. Until the train suddenly screeched to a stop, but it wasn't at a station. It was then she finally looked up, gazing out the window to see the tunnel wall. She glanced back to Sully in confusion.

The speakers of the coach screeched to life. "It seems we have a minor trouble with a row of the wheels on one of the coaches... We'll be behind schedule but will proceed again in fifteen minutes."

"Odd...." Sully returned the confused look with one of his own. He looked out at the blank wall, and started to patrol the window, inspecting. He might be clueless about trains, but it was rare to see a train to break down in SS.

"You know, its kinda weird to have a train just go down like this. Hopefully its just a glitch in the system." He grumbled and flomped down on a seat across from where the wolf was standing. "I mean, the last thing we need is another supernatural freak melting the wheels off of subway cars for fun."

That sort of thing was not uncommon. Cafes would have their windows blown out by sonic bursts, parks would get torn to bits by localized storms, pipes burst from a jittery aquakinetic, electrical calamities so common that the citizens consumed 40% of all surge protectors produced. Things had settled down from the old days of skyscraper destroying bloodbaths, but resentment certainly still festered.
