Tales From the Multiverse

Post by MisterEightySix on Mon Feb 24, 2014 5:01 am

I was mulling over how to breathe some life into the RP section, and I remembered a project of mine which I was originally doing for Stardust's normal canon: Tales From the Multiverse.

Here's how it works: There are 23 alternate universes, each named after a letter of the Greek alphabet. Universe Alpha is the normal one where RPs tend to take place. Each of the alternate universes is like Universe Alpha, but has a single trope which underlines its environment. Therefore, each of our characters have their looks altered to match.

Here's what I have so far. Let me know if any in particular interest you.

---THE UNIVERSES---

Universe Alpha - Like Reality Unless Noted
This is the universe most of our stuff takes place in. No one trope absorbs this universe enough to warrant a designation, and since everything else takes place here, Universe Alpha is not technically part of Tales From the Multiverse.

Universe Beta - Two-Fisted Tales
The year is 1944. It is the thirtieth anniversary of the beginning of the Great War. Both sides of the war have begun introducing weaponry and other technology normally reserved for science fiction. You are an adventurer, enlisted by the Allies to find ancient artifacts and stop the Axis from abusing their terrible power. There will be mad science, gangsters, occult horrors, exotic locales, Nazis with jetpacks, and lost civilizations deep within an underground realm known as Agartha.

---UNIVERSES GAMMA AND DELTA ARE IN PROGRESS---

Universe Epsilon - Pirates
Become a pirate and sail the high seas in search of booty, both monetary and... the other kind. In a world partially inspired by One Piece, thousands of islands dot the map, and each of them carries tales of monsters and treasure. So what are you waiting for? All you need is a ship and a crew. Just be careful not to run into the more unsavory of the pirates, particularly a man known as Captain Flamebeard...

---UNIVERSES ZETA AND ETA ARE IN PROGRESS---

Universe Theta - Steampunk/Gaslamp Fantasy
It's a time of intrigue and mechanical wonders. Steam-powered devices which have never been seen before have become commonplace, with everything from zeppelins to the amazing "living mannequins". The ladies are beautiful and the gentlemen are chivalrous. But all is not well in this world. There is crime, piracy, slave trafficking, black market body modifications, and a hint that something more supernatural may be going on behind the scenes. Halfway across the world, there's also Cattle Punk and the Weird West for those so inclined.

---UNIVERSES IOTA THROUGH SIGMA ARE IN PROGRESS---

Universe Tau - Rule 63/Lady Land
You probably saw this one coming. In this world, everyone's biological sexes and psychological genders have been flipped, as have the double standards. Oddly, circumstances conspire to keep this world as close a mirror as possible to Universe Alpha, save specific instances where events unfolded specifically due to a character's biology. Not much else to say on this, though trying to keep your character's personality intact without falling into stereotypical behavior does make an interesting experiment.

Universe Upsilon - Cyberpunk/Post-Cyberpunk
This universe is inspired mainly by the cyberpunk movies of the 1980s, though with post-cyberpunk elements. In the not-too-distant future, gigantic Asian corporations have taken over the majority of the world's business. They're highly competitive and utterly ruthless, though still possessing morals and a code of honor. You are a literal corporate gunslinger, acting as a veritable one-man army when the time comes to "do business". Or, failing that, you are a professional hacker, seeking to establish peace and order across the real world and cyberspace alike.

---UNIVERSES PHI AND CHI ARE IN PROGRESS---

Universe Psi - High School AU/Humanity Ensues
Are we human? Here, yes. In possibly the oddest of all the universes, our characters become (relatively) ordinary humans. Worse yet, they're stuck in a high school which takes no shame in ripping off Mean Girls and Disney sitcoms. Prepare to face manic teachers, awkward romance, and bullies who seem to get away with everything. The world here is against you... but you can still beat it.

Universe Omega - Mirror Universe
There's always one. In this world, the moralities of good and evil have been reversed. Heroes are villains, and bizarrely, villains are heroes. It's just like in "Mirror, Mirror" on Star Trek, Moebius (Anti-Mobius) in the Archie Comics, or the Anti-Matter Universe in DC Comics.

The unfinished universes are open to ideas, and will be posted when they're finished. No, this isn't entirely based on the Zone Wars arc in the Sonic Archie comic way back when, but it is to some extent.

Why not a pair for Demonic and Angelic forces?

One of my evil FCs had come from a distant planet from a different dimension.

Because dimensions are technically part of a single universe. Same cake, different layer. Plus, each of these universes is intended to be based on a different genre.

On that note, doesn't being located in a different dimension automatically make a planet distant?

Due to the universe being, well, endless, isn't it impossible to have just 23 alternative universes, since the possibilities are endless, and that there could be a universe for each opposing decision one makes, in a sense. A 'what if' scenario for every possibility ever.
Of course, obviously it's impossible to keep track of every single possibility and every single possibility of an alternative universe in existence. Are the 23 the main ones, (which are treated as highly as the 'true' reality), or is it your canon that the universe is made up of these 23 only?

My words are all over the place, sorry!

I suppose it's the former, though the 23 aren't the only other universes. They just seem to have a connection with each other that most other universes lack, due to all of them being based on a specific genre, et cetera.

Imagine that the multiverse is like an infinite forest. These 23 universes are a set of trees clustered together, somewhat separate from the others. Each branches out into timelines (which branch out into more timelines in infinitely-recurring fractal spirals), with one dominant branch (the trunk, you might call it) being the one within which most of the narrative of that universe takes place. Finally, the leaves on each branch are iterations of different dimensions or planes of reality (Heaven, Hell, and even the Shadow Lands are classified under this heading), all of which are tied to the general growth of their branch.

But don't read too much into this, because these universes, while connected, rarely interact. I'm just trying to do something fun and see what bizarre incarnations of our characters result from trying to fit them into a given setting.
